Ever ridden mountain bikes in Lesotho before? If not, you’ve been missing something magical. You see, these are big mountains with big valleys and big views. The Maluti Mountain Goat Adventure follows pre-set routes, designed to deliver a mountain biking adventure like no other.
First held in 2018, with a second edition in 2019, the Maluti Mountain Goat Adventure was paused from 2020-2023 due to the restrictions of the Covid-19 period. The organisers pushed play again this year, with the added support of Talon Tough Tools, and the event was once again a huge success.
For the 2025 edition, there are two entry packages, both of which include meals and three nights’ accommodation: The Silver Rider’s Package at R4900 and the Gold Rider’s Package at R6350. This is not tented accommodation (but tents will be erected on Night 1 if necessary for late entrants), it’s formal rondawel building accommodation designed to enhance the high-mountain wilderness experience.
With an elevation of over 3000 metres above sea level, and the route 75% singletrack, the wilderness riding is something quite different to that encountered at popular multi-day events. Here’s a summary of the riding routes:
Friday 22 March: Dirt Breath Express
An adventure ride of 50km through the ‘Lowlands’ of the region, starting and finishing at Momohase B&B set in the Lesotho sandstone, the venue for the first night’s accommodation. The route takes in a combination of singletrack trails, district road link sections and slab rock (Lesotho’s version of Moab!). You will ride along the banks of the Kukune River through some of the most fascinating rock formations.
Saturday 23 March: Black Mountain Pass
Don’t be fooled by the relatively shorter distance of 35km. This day’s route starts and finishes at Afriski, the accommodation venue for the remaining two nights. You will ride the iconic Black Mountain Pass trail, which peaks at 3222m above sea level (highest road in Southern Africa) and drops to 2525m above sea level, before making the return back up. Trees don’t grow this high up, so your views in every direction are spectacular mountains and valleys.
Sunday 24 March: Goldilocks
After a short climb, the route is a one-direction descent on the Goldilocks Trail descending 675 metres. An engaging trail that’s mildly challenging for intermediate level riders and a real thrill for advanced riders. There’s a shuttle to get you back to Afriski so that you have plenty of time to return home.
If you’re intimidated by travelling to another country, don’t be. It’s Lesotho, not Zimbabwe. Yes, you need a valid passport and papers that confirm your car belongs to you. It takes just over four hours to drive to the start from Joburg and Pretoria and five hours from Durban. But you have to drive to most stage races too, right? Or fly and then drive… Lesotho has many similarities to South Africa, but enough differences to remind you that you are in another country. It’s quite a special experience.
“The Maluti Mountain Goat Adventure is one of the best multi-day rides I have experienced in more than 30 years of mountain biking throughout South African and internationally. If you’re an intermediate or experienced rider that’s yearning for a completely new mountain biking experience, this is for you. The fact that it’s so well priced makes it an easy decision to enter.” – Sean Badenhorst, Founder & Editor of TREAD Media.
“This is my favourite singletrack in the whole world! It’s amazing, it’s natural terrain, and sometimes it feels like you’re in the Himalayas, on some goat tracks, sometimes it feels like you’re on an Enduro race course, sometimes you feel lost. The scenery matches Utah in the United States.” – Conrad Stoltz, multiple X-Terra World Champion and trail-builder.
The Maluti Mountain Goat Adventure is not the ideal event for beginners. It’s designed to be stimulating for intermediate and advanced level mountain bikers. eBikes are welcome, but should adhere to the overall acoustic bike rhythm of the adventure.
