The 2017 SA National MTB Cup Series XCO final and the third round of the National Downhill Cup will take place at the world-class Cascades MTB Park in Pietermaritzburg on 17 and 18 June respectively. Both events form part of an action-packed mountain bike long-weekend, with a special Enduro racing installment lined up for Friday 16 June.
The relatively newer of mountain bike disciplines in South Africa, Enduro, provides the perfect combination of untimed up rides with full-gas downhill fury where each stage’s down-ride time (usually between 3-5 stages) counts.
Saturday’s XCO event is a UCI Cat 1 event and is also part of the UCI Junior World Series, which is made up of 27 events around the world, allowing Junior riders to earn valuable points that contribute to their UCI World Junior Rankings. Currently, the Series Log after three events shows Alan Hatherly and Mariske Strauss in the leading Men and Women’s Pro Elite categories with 525 points each. Sunday 18 June will see some of the country’s greatest downhill experts take to the ever-exciting KwaZulu-Natal track. The previous round of the Downhill Series, which took place in Jonkershoek, saw Theo Erlangsen take the top honours in the Elite Men’s event ahead of Christopher and Jonathan Philogene in second and third place respectively. The Western Cape’s Rika Olivier was the fastest women down the hill on the day. To see the current Downhill Cup Series Log after two events, click here:https://www.cyclingsa.com/s/
KwaZulu-Natal’s capital city has for many years played host to various UCI MTB World Cup legs, three UCI MTB World Championships, two UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup legs, as well as other international events across all disciplines, guaranteeing weekend attendees world-class excitement from Friday morning.
