The 2020 FNB Wines2Whales mountain bike stage race has been cancelled. The decision was made known on Friday 28 August to entrants of the event, which was due to take place in three editions between 30 October and 8 November 2020.
“Over recent weeks we have remained positive and worked towards being able to deliver the FNB Wines2Whales Switchback, as scheduled, on 30 October to 8 November 2020,” said the statement from race founder, Johan Kriegler.
“Our commitment to you has always been to deliver a truly memorable race experience that is safe and filled with awesome vibes. Unfortunately, due to reasons related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including the uncertainty over the duration and extent of government restrictions concerning mass gatherings and sport events, we regret to advise that the FNB Wines2Whales cannot take place as planned in 2020.”
Entrants for the 2020 edition will automatically have their entries rolled over to next year’s edition, scheduled from 29 October until 7 November 2020.
The cancellation of the 2020 FNB Wines2Whales follows the cancellation of other major South African stage races, including the 2020 Absa Cape Epic, the 2020 joBerg2c and the 2020 Momentum Health Cape Pioneer presented by Biogen, all due to the restrictions of the South African government’s Covid-19 lockdown strategy.
