In light of significant trail damage, environmental concerns, and a commitment to supporting local landowners, the organisers of Bike Fest Paarl, originally scheduled for 27-29 September 2024, have made the difficult decision to postpone the event to 2025.
In a press release, the organisers say:
This decision highlights our dedication not only to delivering a world-class event but also to protecting the environment and supporting the community that makes this event possible.
Over the past six weeks, the Paarl region has experienced unprecedented rainfall, with over 500mm recorded – setting a new record for this period. Combined with the devastating fires in April, the trails and surrounding landscapes are in a delicate state.
Hosting an event that draws thousands of visitors under these conditions would risk severe and lasting damage to the fragile ecosystem. We are committed to ensuring that the natural beauty of Paarl is preserved for future generations.
Beyond the environmental impact, we recognise that many local landowners have been significantly affected by the recent weather events. The decision to postpone Bike Fest Paarl provides an opportunity for us to support these landowners in their recovery efforts.
Instead of focusing on event preparations, we will be working closely with local stakeholders to help restore the trails and land, ensuring they can return to their full splendour by 2025. This is a critical time for our community, and we believe it is essential to stand together and assist those who need it most.
We are excited to announce that Bike Fest Paarl will now take place from 28th February to 2nd March 2025. This new date not only allows for environmental recovery but also gives us the chance to include an XCO UCI Cat 1 event, adding an extra layer of excitement to our weekend lineup. The timing also aligns perfectly with the lead-up to the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the ABSA Cape Epic, making it an ideal opportunity for out-of-town competitors to join in the festivities.
We would like to assure all competitors, vendors, and supporters that we are committed to making Bike Fest Paarl 2025 our most successful event yet. Vendors and competitors who have already paid for entries or Expo space will have the option to receive a full refund or transfer their entry/booking to the new March 2025 dates.
