There’s a brand-new mountain bike event on the West Rand that’s set to become a permanent annual highlight. The Everything.Insure Berge & Dale MTB Challenge will take place on Sunday 27 February 2022 at Kingskloof with distances to cater for all levels of mountain biker.

The event is guaranteed to live up to its name – Berge & Dale is Afrikaans for Hills and Valleys. Kingskloof has traditionally been a trails venue only tackled by the strong, but event organiser, Erick Oosthuizen has secured access to neighbouring land that will allow for a more undulating area to be used, which ensures routes that are ridable for all abilities.
“There are two events, a 50km and a 20km. Although 50km isn’t considered long for a Gauteng marathon race distance, the route, which incorporates some testing climbs through the rocky kloof and a high percentage of singletrack, will ensure every kilometre is memorable, with plenty of reward to balance out the challenges,” said Oosthuizen.
Kingskloof is a popular venue for riders training for the Absa Cape Epic because it is one of the few Gauteng trails parks that offers the right mix of rugged terrain and challenging gradient. By holding the Berge & Dale MTB race there, the organisers, Slipstream Events, will be helping introduce a wider range of mountain bikers to the area, which is surprisingly wilderness-like for a venue so close to the city.
“Our Berge & Dale road race, which was established over two decades ago and which takes place the day before, has become a West Rand favourite and is known for its stimulating route. We aim to deliver a mountain bike event with the same high standard,” added Oosthuizen.
“We’re pleased to see cycling back after a period of uncertainty and limited events, so it was an easy decision for us to partner with Berge & Dale to bring the community the event that will kick start our 2022 cycling calendar,” said Werner Slabbert, Executive Head: First Equity PSG Division.
“With most of us having to live socially distanced and largely sedentary lives, cycling is the one sport that can enable a healthy and active lifestyle. With the partnership between Everything.Insure and Berge & Dale, we hope to bring back a degree of normal life to the cycling community,” added Slabbert.
