The retail giant, which is owned by the MoreCorp group, is already established in the larger urban centres, with stores in Johannesburg (Fourways and Boksburg), Pretoria (Lynnwood), Cape Town (N1 City and Tyger Valley) and Durban (Cornubia). The two new store locations have been selected to service the growing cycling communities on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast and the Western Cape’s Winelands region.
“KwaZulu-Natal is a key area for us. Even though we have the Cornubia megastore in Umhlanga, our intent has always been to expand further north. The Ballito area is growing and there’s a strong cycling and mountain biking element there, which we plan to service with the widest range of bikes, clothing, accessories and more,” said Taryn Henstock, Cycling Marketing Manager, MoreCycle Group.
Cycle Lab Ballito will be located at Ballito Junction and will open for business on Thursday 1 August. It will share a premises with The Pro Shop, the large golf retailer in the MoreCorp group.
“As a shopping destination, Ballito Junction shares many of our values, including family, healthy lifestyle and enjoying outdoor activities. The Cycle Lab and Pro Shop will open simultaneously and will be great for cyclists that enjoy golf and vice versa. Our research shows the cross-over is as high as 30% between the two sports,” said Henstock.
In addition to its national retail focus for popular cycling disciplines like mountain biking, road cycling, gravel racing and eBikes, Cycle Lab has invested in the next generation of cyclists by establishing the Cycle Lab Schools MTB Series. Started in Gauteng in 2022, the 2024 Cycle Lab Schools MTB Series has expanded to KwaZulu-Natal. The opening of a second store in that province will add support and value to the series, which is focused on high school participation in Gauteng, but high school and primary schools in KwaZulu-Natal.
“We’re excited to have a new location ahead of the Amashova National Classic, one the country’s most popular road races, which takes place on 20 October. With our Ballito Cycle Lab store, we will be able to offer the race entrants guided training rides from the new store, workshop evenings, tech talks and more,” added Henstock.
The timing of the Ballito store opening is ideal. In addition to offering incredible opening specials, Ballito customers will also benefit from Cycle Lab’s annual Summit Sale in August and September, Black Friday specials in November and Festive Sale in December.
The new Paarl presence will also see the establishment of a Cycle Lab Pro Shop Emporium. Former pro racer and retail stalwart, Hanco Kachelhoffer will head up the Cycle Lab Paarl store, ensuring a confident introduction to the region, which has become one of the hotbeds of cycling in the country in recent years. The Paarl store is planned to open on 25 October 2024. It will be located at Concorde Builders Precinct, Cecilia Street.
In addition to being surrounded by several scenic road and gravel riding routes, Cycle Lab Paarl will be in close proximity to Paarl Trails, an established, popular world-class mountain bike trails network.
“We already have a strong presence in the Southern and Northern greater Cape Town region, but it’s essential to ensure we also give the large – and growing – cycling community in the Winelands region access to our wide range of brands, workshop expertise and inclusive, non-intimidating retail environment,” said Henstock.
The same brands that are available in other Cycle Lab stores will be on sale at the Ballito and Paarl stores, including SCOTT, Cannondale, Orbea, Merida, Titan Racing and Pinarello bikes; Shimano and SRAM components, Maxxis, Schwalbe, Vittoria and Continental tyres, MET, Kask, Abus, Giro and Rudy Project helmets, Oakley, Scicon, Uvex and D’Arcs eyewear, Assos, Santini, Ciovita, First Ascent and Wattz apparel and Shimano, SIDI, DMT and SCOTT shoes.
