There are limited marathon-style races on the Gauteng race calendar. It’s no wonder the new Fedgroup Cradle 100 one-day race on Saturday 12 April is creating such a buzz. Here’s what you need to know and how to enter.
Paid partnership with Fedgroup
The brand-new Fedgroup Cradle 100 is a two-day mountain bike stage race that takes place on 12 and 13 April on the Fedgroup Trails network northwest of Johannesburg. The first day also doubles as a stand-alone 45km marathon with a 25km half-marathon and a 10km fun ride. There’s a distance to suit all mountain bikers with a start and finish at Avianto Clubhouse, promising a fantastic day of mountain biking.
The 45km marathon follows a route that has a surprising volume of climbing with plenty of singletrack, making for a solid all-round test of mountain biking skill, strength and stamina. This distance is ideal for experienced riders who have good mountain bike racing conditioning, but also for those who are keen to try and step up to a longer distance without too much risk.

The 25km half-marathon will deliver an engaging route with a moderate volume of climbing and non-technical singletrack. This is an ideal distance for weekend warriors who enjoy the challenges of mountain biking, but who aren’t able to train consistently.
The 10km fun ride is ideal for beginners and children and will offer a low-risk, high-fun route that’s unintimidating.
The event is sponsored by Fedgroup, a specialist financial services commercial property and investments provider with a strong focus on family and outdoor activities. The planning and execution of the event is done by the same teams who organised the very successful USN Cup MTB Series and the Eqstra Spring Classic.

“The Fedgroup Cradle 100 one-day race will be a celebration of the great trails network that Fedgroup has been developing around Avianto and the Cradle of Humankind. The network is coming together really nicely with new sections of trail mixed with some established trails in the area, all of which are purpose built for mountain biking,” said Andrew Grobler, Race Director.
“Unfortunately, there aren’t that many one-day marathon races in the Joburg area these days. With almost two decades’ experience in delivering high-value, safe mountain bike races, we plan to craft a mountain bike race to remember. Together with Fedgroup, we have planned a fun, festive day out and look forward to seeing the riders cross the finish line with smiles,” added Grobler.
