In 2005, a bunch of mates and I were looking for more space to ride (our favourite Joburg routes were compromised by estates), and to have a place to re-energise away from it all. We found a ‘mountain’ in the Eastern Free State between Bethlehem and Fouriesberg and we started to farm mountain biking. Until recently this has been a subsistence mountain bike farm, and leisure farming for our friends and family. We have had the best weekends ever. Parties, braais, rides until we can ride no more, walks, hikes, runs, and chill out yoga. One of us even got married on the farm.
Between 2006 and 2007 we cultivated some incredible trails and haven’t stopped innovating since then. We also built some basic but proper en-suite accommodation with a central kitchen and boma.
We have hosted some fun events and had some incredible times at the farm. Greg Minnaar has been there to demo his immense skills on the trails and even better skills in the pub. We have had single speed events, enduro events and festivals. All for fun.
Today, the Holey Trails farm is perfect for anyone who wants a proper escape, or to run a lifestyle business and for those who might want to host trail running and mountain bike events.
It is now open for booking to the public. It has transformed into both a friends-and-family destination as well as a business opportunity for those who want to offer adventure and escape to the inspired. It has potential to settle on the land and create something truly special; or it can be a getaway place to get much needed rest.
Why are we selling? Some of the owners, who are all friends, have moved to parts of the world that make it impossible to get to the farm. The main purpose of the Holey Trails is to get there and to ride, relax and spend time with like-minded friends and family. We are now looking for the next generation who will enjoy this place as much we have.
