Another stage thrown at the riders with adverse conditions, and it seems
that team RECM have things sown up for this race. Even after all that’s
happened, they have come thru what the race has thrown at them as the best
all round and most well prepared team.
I would guess that tomorrow, SCOTT Factory Racing will throw what ever they
have left at trying desperately to win the race, but I fear it’s too much to
do, too late. Especially with the route being changed and shortened due to
the hectic weather.
When you’re wearing the yellow jersey on the final day, you have a lot more
motivation to push harder to keep it, so I can’t see much changing on the
current GC positions, but I guess it will be a great race and an exciting
finish to another fantastic Cape Pioneer Trek.
Gawie and Nico have done well to maintain consistency throughout the race
and have now moved into fourth. Brandon and Konny will now probably try to
consolidate their third place. A podium finish when you race for a living is
significant. It’s unfortunate they had the bad luck of Konny’s crash on
Stage 3 because they really were looking strong and the result could have
been so different.
