What started out as a BMX bike brand evolved to produce mountain bikes that have been ridden and raced to success by some of the biggest icons in mountain biking. That GT credibility is still as strong as ever and can be found in its Avalanche hardtail range, available in South Africa today.

What does GT stand for? Good Times, obviously. Well, that’s what it’s come to represent, but the brand was named after its founder, Gary Turner. In 1972, Turner decided to make BMX frames for his kids because he wasn’t satisfied with the durability of other frames available at the time.
GT’s durability was one thing, but it began to grow a reputation as a high-performance brand too and eventually became one of the most successful BMX racing brands. In the late 1980s, GT began to expand beyond BMX bikes with road bikes and mountain bikes and also enjoyed growth internationally.
Already a legendary BMX racing brand, GT then gained mountain bike racing credibility with three UCI Downhill World Championships titles via Gee Atherton in 2014 and Rachel Atherton in 2013 and 2015. Rachel Atherton also won the UCI Downhill World Cup Series overall title in 2013 and 2015 on GT bikes.
Mountain bike industry legend, Hans Rey https://hansrey.com , winner of multiple world trials titles and various industry awards, has been a GT rider since 1987. It’s probably the longest running sponsorship in any cycling discipline and it exemplifies GTs commitment to designing and building durable bikes that deliver good times!
That same GT philosophy is evident today through GT’s range of bicycles from BMX, to eBikes, to gravel bikes and mountain bikes – both full-suspension and hardtail. Although the brand is iconic, there’s never been significant barriers to gain access to GT. This is evident in its entry-level hardtail model, the Avalanche.
The Avalanche has been in the GT model range for a long time and many a life-long mountain biker recalls with fondness his/her introduction to the exciting, fulfilling lifestyle sport aboard a GT Avalanche.
As you would expect, the Avalanche frame, made from 6061 Aluminium is exceptionally durable. It has recently been redesigned to deliver improved performance with modern 29er geometry and a cleaner appearance. It retains GT’s proprietary Triple Triangle design, which increases frame stiffness under acceleration and overall frame strength, but now also boasts internal cable routing for a less cluttered look.
