Since its arrival here in 2007, Chinese motor brand, Great Wall Motor Company (GWM), has steadily been making an impact on the South African pick-up vehicle market. Now, with the launch of its new P-Series 4X4 Double Cab Bakkie, it’s taking aim at the mountain bike market, starting with a partnership with media brand, TREAD Media.

Established in 2009, and headed up by veteran cycling writer, Sean Badenhorst, TREAD Media is South Africa’s most authoritative mountain bike media brand. With off-shoot brands Top MTB Trails (online mountain bike trails resource) and SHRED Media (sub-category aimed at youth mountain bikers), TREAD Media engages with the entire South African mountain bike market with its website, weekly mailer and social media platforms.

“Mountain biking is constantly evolving and we like to reflect that with our content. Because it only focuses on South African mountain biking, TREAD Media has become the authority on the most popular cycling discipline in the country and we are confidently in touch with the market which has multiple sub-disciplines and a range of sub-cultures,” said TREAD Media co-founder and editor, Sean Badenhorst.

“We’re stoked to welcome GWM as our new vehicle partner. The brand is progressive and headed up by experienced minds that understand the complexity and challenges of this country. But they also focus on positives and encouraging South Africans to travel, be active and enjoy our beautiful country, which is something we strongly align with,” added Badenhorst.

GWM Boksburg has supplied TREAD Media with the P-Series Limited. The GWM P-Series is among the top-five selling Double Cab Bakkies in South Africa and the recent addition of the Limited, which is packed with extras but priced moderately, is expected to boost sales further.

“At GWM Boksburg we relish the opportunity to partner with TREAD Media. It gives us the opportunity to reach the mountain bike market with the vehicles that suit the active lifestyle of those who want practical, high-quality vehicles at a reasonable price,” said Sean Naested, Dealer Principal of GWM Boksburg.

“The GWM P-Series offers a range of hardworking, reliable bakkies that meet the needs of South African market at a very reasonable price. We’re seeing increasing market penetration as more and more discerning buyers discover the exceptional value for money in our GWM vehicles,” added Naested.

“Having driven the GWM P-Series LTD for the past few weeks, on longish trips and off-road, our early impression is that we are both a little surprised and suitably impressed. As a national media brand, we travel extensively and will be getting to know this vehicle intimately. We’ll certainly be sharing our experience and opinion with our readers and followers from time to time,” said Badenhorst.
