As preparations for the new Mandela Day Marathon MTB Dash continue, a major step forward was taken today with the unveiling of the courses for the 42km & 21km races that make up the event. The event is being staged under the auspices of KZN MTB and the experienced team that have worked on the four MTB World Cup and three MTB World Championships events staged in Pietermaritzburg since 2009 are overseeing the staging of this event which will ensure it will be staged to the highest possible level.
Alec Lenferna will head up the team as the Event Director and Nick Floros will be the Race Manager and Course Designer with Dellah Paul as the Administration Manager for the event. Since the official launch on the 24th June, the MTB Dash has created a stir amongst the MTB community country wide – not only with riders who want to touched by the “Madiba Magic” as part of the Mandela Day Marathon programme, but also due to the fact that it is the richest race in its category on the calendar with just over R 117 000.00 prizemoney that will be paid out on the day.

“This is going to be a great event and I’m really excited to be part of something new and to be able to contribute towards something that celebrates the memory of the amazing Nelson Mandela is fantastic”, said Event Director Alec Lenferna. “It’s this kind of event that furthers the aims of mountain biking in general as it should be about people of all ages and skills levels getting out there to give it a go”. Nick Floros has put the course together that will see the event start and finish at the Mandela Capture site near Howick and had this to say about the courses, “We’ve put together courses that cater for all as we want as many people as possible to come and enjoy the event. However, it is also a race with proper prizemoney and what will make the courses challenging for those at the sharp end is the speed that they will ride it so really what we’ve tried to do is tick all the boxes for an event of this nature”.
