The biggest race in cycling, the Tour de France, starts on Saturday 29 June! Why not use the event to create your own riding challenge and improve your fitness in the process? Cycle Lab, South Africa’s largest cycling retailer, has created a realistic challenge that anyone can do – even mountain bikers – with great rewards and prizes up for grabs too!

Paid partnership with MyCycleLife

My Own Tour de France challenges anyone with a bicycle to ride for at least 30 minutes and 5km on each of the 21 Tour de France stages. It’s fairly easy to get into the My Own Tour de France peloton. Just register with MyCycleLife (if you haven’t already) and link your Strava account to the My Own Tour de France Challenge when prompted. This will ensure that all your rides that you upload to Strava from Saturday 29 June until Sunday 21 July 2024, will count towards your progress in the My Own Tour de France Challenge.

Here’s what you need to know:

Ride frequency: On each day of a 2024 Tour de France stage. There are 21 in total with two rest days. It’s not necessary to ride on the rest days (Monday 8 July and Monday 15 July), but you can do rides on those days if you want to.

Ride duration/distance: Each ride must be at least 30 minutes in duration and 5km in distance to count.

Type of ride: Any ride will qualify – can be road, mountain bike or gravel rides. Indoor rides also count.

What’s up for grabs? You can get 20% off your basket, capped at R200 each week for completed riding. The vouchers can be redeemed in-store and online and must be redeemed within seven days of allocation.

Those that complete all three weeks will earn commemorative My Own Tour de France apparel.

Who can enter? Anyone can enter. You just need to be able to complete daily bicycle rides and upload them to your Strava account. You must register to enter the challenge here. If you do not sign up, you will not be eligible for the discount vouchers or main prizes, which you must link to your MyCycleLife profile.

What about ambitious riders? There will be further recognition of My Own Tour de France participants in the following categories:

  • Longest hours in saddle
  • Most elevation gained
  • Highest average speed ridden

These are for totals accumulated for the full 23-day duration, not per ride or per week.

There are Men and Women’s leaderboards for each category. Prizes in the form of MyCycleLife vouchers will be awarded for each category as follows:

1st R3 000

2nd R2 000

3rd R1 000

If you miss a week, it’s okay. You can tackle the whole three weeks or just one or two weeks, depending on what suits you best. However, to qualify for one of the main prizes, you must complete 21 days of rides. You can catch up two rides on the two rest days if you happen to miss any. But you cannot do multiple rides on one day. Only one ride per day will be counted.

There are no losers in the My Own Tour de France Challenge. Not only can all members of the My Own Tour de France peloton earn weekly Cycle Lab discount vouchers, but riding consistently through the coldest month of the year in South Africa will make you fitter, stronger and more confident. And that holds immense value…
