The inaugural edition of the Harvard House GoGravel Midlands at Karkloof on Sunday 13 August, will double as the 2023 South African Gravel Championships. A strong field, comprising mountain bikers, road racers and gravel racers from around the country will contest the event in three different distance options.
Paid partnership with Harvard House GoGravel Midlands
The event is brand new with the intension of becoming an annual race in the increasingly popular Gravel racing discipline. The organisers do however have event experience and also organise the Berg 100, a popular annual race in the Central Drakensberg region. Karkloof Country Club is used to host multiple events each year and is exceptionally well equipped for GoGravel Midlands.
Here are six key features of the 2023 GoGravel Midlands:
The Route is King
The race offers a selection of carefully curated routes, designed with help of SA Gravel Guru, Kevin Benkenstein, catering to riders of varying abilities and interests. From the scenic 60km route to the more demanding 100km and 140km challenges for seasoned cyclists, there is something for everyone. All routes are non-technical with no singletrack, and will include gravel district roads and some forestry tracks.
Breath-taking Landscapes
Participants will have the opportunity to traverse breath-taking landscapes that showcase the natural beauty and hidden gems of the Karkloof region. The routes have been meticulously designed to showcase the region’s stunning vistas, picturesque farms, tranquil plantations, and awe-inspiring backcountry.
Unparalleled Support
The organisers pride themselves on providing top-notch support to all participants. Water tables along the routes will offer refreshments and assistance, ensuring riders are fuelled and motivated to conquer each leg of their gravel adventure.
Festive Atmosphere
The event is more than just a cycling event; it’s a celebration of the MTB/Gravel Cycling Community. Participants, their families, and spectators can look forward to a festive atmosphere filled with camaraderie, entertainment and delicious local food, including a Saturday afternoon registration braai.
Community and Charity
In line with its commitment to community involvement, the event will support several local community groups and charities, either by them providing services to the event, such as running water tables, or by making financial donations from the event to chosen charities, such as the Wild Bike Foundation.
Added Value
All entrants will receive a free 35km, GPS route, to ride on Saturday, the day before the race, which is a great way to make a weekend out of the event and loosen up the legs. This is followed by registration at Karkloof Country Club from 3pm, and a “meet the locals” braai, with braai packs available, pre-made fires and complimentary salads on offer, as well as live entertainment.
“We are excited to bring this thrilling new event to mountain bike and gravel enthusiasts from around South Africa. With its exceptional routes, breath-taking landscapes, and commitment to fostering a vibrant and charitable cycling community, the Harvard House GoGravel Midlands race is set to become a highlight on the SA cycling calendar,” said Race Organiser, Katie Fogg.
