You may not spend too much time thinking about how you secure your race number or trail access board to your mountain bike’s handlebars, but the guys at NB Mounts have been thinking of it constantly. Their design eliminates the use of cable ties/zip ties and offers a classy, practical solution. Now, with new packaging they’ve begun exporting the product.

In 2020, during the South African government’s lockdown in reaction to the Covid-19 virus, Kevin Taljaard began his quest to design a mountain bike handlebar board mounting system to eliminate cable ties. The initial design incorporated two injection-moulded plastic mounts that you secure around your handlebar with a rubber O-ring and then attach your number board to the mounts with a plastic plug.

Generation 2 saw the rubber O-ring clasps being replaced with silicone elastic. An industrial strength band with a little tab that allows you sufficient grip to position the NB Mounts where you want them – and move or remove them easily. There are two clasp options, one for narrow diameter bars and one for wide diameter bars.

NB Mounts are injection moulded in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and have gained good traction in South Africa with large numbers of participants in events such as Trans Baviaans, Absa Cape Epic and many other South African mountain bike and gravel races finding value in the product. It’s which is practical, visually appealing and does its bit to cut back on single-use plastics.

“We have reached a point where the design is refined and the product is getting very good reviews from users. It’s one of those products that you don’t realise you need until you have it,” said Taljaard.

“We have added new packaging recently to cater for the international market. We have started exporting and the new packaging includes a QR code, which links to a how-to-assemble video. Events abroad seem to be more environmentally conscious with regard to single-use plastics, so we are expecting good international interest in NB Mounts over the next few months,” he added.

While the NB Mounts product is the company’s primary focus, the team members have been working on designs of other cycling related products that they are currently testing and expecting to launch in the next few months. NB Mounts is actively seeking international distributors, who can email info@nbmounts.co.za for more details.
