The Karkloof Country Club is a flagship partner in the Sappi Trails Programme. Sappi has not only provided access to the bulk of the forestry land on which the Karkloof trails are built, but has for several years also invested in growing the trails through its title sponsorship of the annual Sappi Karkloof Classic Trails Festival.

As an extension to this partnership, we are handing over the custodianship of the magnificent Karkloof Falls to the Club.

Sappi has been enormously privileged in having had this magnificent 105 metres high waterfall known by the early settlers as ‘the most beautiful waterfall in the land’, which plunges over the cliff on Sappi’s Shafton Grange in our custody for all these years.  And whilst the Karkloof Falls and Woodhouse Falls have been accessible to the public, given the success of our partnership with the Club it seems natural to extend their Access Agreement to include this truly special site.

The Karkloof Falls consists of two areas – the main area and the Woodhouse Falls, which are above the main falls. Both Falls have picnic areas and recently upgraded ablution facilities. They are very popular attractions on the famed Midlands Meander route and can be accessed via the Karkloof trails or road. Whilst the main Falls are accessible in a normal car, it should be noted that it is advised that the Woodhouse Falls be accessed using a high clearance vehicle and 4×4 only in wet weather. People can access the Falls either by becoming annual members of the Karkloof Country Club or by paying a day visitor fee which will be aligned to the standard trail fee structure that is currently in place.

We are excited about this new development and look forward to the opportunities which this offers the Club to diversify its tourism and conservation role in the valley.
