The Sappi Mankele Challenge, taking place on the 5th of April, offers a variety of exciting mountain bike routes designed for all skill levels. “We’ve worked hard to create race routes that mean the whole family can enter, regardless of their skill or fitness levels, there is something for everyone” says Danie Botha of 2D Adventures who are hosting the event.

15km Route:
This beginner-friendly route mostly consists of open jeep tracks. The initial half includes some gentle climbs, followed by a pleasant, flat stretch back to the start with nice sections of singletrack. The 15km is perfect for beginners or for young folks wanting to race as fast as they can over a shorter distance.
35km Route:
Suited for intermediate riders, this route primarily features open plantation roads without technical challenges. Expect a good workout until the second waterpoint, after which the last 12km is a fast ride back to Mankele. Enjoy flowing forest singletrack that becomes more challenging with speed.
“For the 2025 race we have been working on new sections of singletrack which we can’t wait for the contestants to try out. Mainly found in the pines, it adds a whole new dimension of fun for the cyclists this year” said Botha.
50km and 70km Routes:
These advanced routes are designed to test riders’ fitness with longer distances. The terrain includes open plantation roads and exciting singletrack. After reaching waterpoint 3, which is the King and Queen of the Mountain spot, riders can enjoy more singletrack before the routes diverge. The 70km route takes a detour before rejoining the 50km route towards waterpoint 4. Both routes bring riders home with an exciting 12km downhill ride back to Mankele, featuring exhilarating singletrack to finish the day.
5km Trail Run:
The 5km trail run takes place around the Mankele Adventures base and includes a mix of jeep track and trail. It’s a nice event for family members who aren’t mountain bikers but still want to do something active, and people are more than welcome to walk it too. The area is beautiful and home to prolific bird life which makes for interesting viewing.
