There both a marathon and a half-marathon option, so mountain bikers of all levels will be able to enjoy the two-day event on some of the most engaging and scenic trails in the country.

MARATHON

“The Marathon is designed for fitter, more experienced riders who feel confident on technical terrain,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Event Founder. “The route showcases some of Stellenbosch’s best trails. The punchy climbs and rocky singletracks are characteristic of the area. Fitness will definitely enhance the overall experience.”

Day 1 of the Marathon covers 48km with a total ascent of 1400m. Described as a “lucky packet” of mountain biking, it offers a variety of short, punchy climbs, smooth singletrack, long climbs, and technical terrain, all set against diverse and stunning scenery. It will be one of the most thrilling stages in the region, featuring a unique combination of trails, including an exclusive section in Keermont that promises to wow riders. Other highlights include the ever-popular trails of Mont Marie, Dornier, Ernie Els and Stellenzicht.

“This stage is relatively technical but designed to challenge competent riders while ensuring plenty of fun on the trails,” confirms Meyer. “As the profile suggests, expect plenty of ups and downs, so save something in the tank for the final climb.”

Day 2 of the Marathon spans 54km with 900m of climbing. It’s flatter and faster than Day 1 but includes some technical sections and lung-busting climbs. For the first time, the underrated Somerbosch Trails will be featured, with the Faure Drop promising an adrenaline rush – don’t forget to take in the views along the way.

“Stage 2 is less technical than Stage 1,” notes Meyer. “However, sections like the Faure Drop and G-Spot demand skill to be fully enjoyed. Don’t rush the flat section out of town; use it to shake off the fatigue from Stage 1, chat with fellow riders, and ease into the ride. Though the profile may seem less intimidating, the trails still pack a punch, so save some energy for the final climb of the event.”

HALF-MARATHON

For those looking for a less intense experience, the Half Marathon is perfect for novice stage racers or riders who want to enjoy the event’s atmosphere while experiencing the magnificent Stellenbosch trails.

“Though fitness is recommended, the Half Marathon is accessible to all levels,” says Meyer. “There are no overly technical sections, and the route offers the chance to ride the Somerbosch Trails for the first time in the event’s history.”

Day 1 of the Half Marathon features a 26km route with a total ascent of 650m, offering a balanced stage with a mix of jeep track and single track. Highlights include the floating bridge at Mont Marie and the iconic G-Spot trail. This stage caters to riders of all levels, incorporating some technical riding without the more challenging sections of the full Marathon.

“This year, riders will get to experience the G-Spot trail, which was bypassed in 2023,” says Meyer. “Take advantage of the water points and enjoy the vibe along the route. Pace yourself in the singletrack and remember to save something for the last 8km.”

Day 2 of the Half Marathon covers 36km with a 600m ascent. It’s flatter and smoother than Stage 1, featuring fun singletrack and climbs toward the end, and offering riders their first chance to tackle the Somerbosch Trails.

“Stage 2 is less technical but features faster and smoother singletrack,” Meyer confirms. “Again, don’t start too fast out of town. Although the profile seems manageable, the trails can still take their toll, so keep some energy for the final climb.”

In closing, Meyer adds, “Whether you choose the Marathon or Half Marathon, the Savanna Origin of Trails MTB Experience offers world-class, exclusive trails while celebrating the birthplace of South African mountain biking. Expect to fall in love with the sport all over again.”

DRESS UP AND WIN!

Organisers are once again on the lookout for the “best dressed” rider of 2024 in both male and female categories. The stakes are high, with R20,000 up for grabs (R10,000 per rider) and 10 cases of Savanna each, making it a competition that you won’t want to miss.

“The Dress-Up Competition is a highlight each year at the Savanna Origin of Trails,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Event Founder. “Riders surprise us annually with their creativity and unique interpretations of the Dress-Up theme. It makes judging incredibly tough, which is why we keep things fair by letting the riders make the final call.”

“Savanna was named the No. 1 cider in the world in 2024, so we felt it only fitting to incorporate this achievement into the 2024 Dress-Up Theme,” continues Meyer. “We’re challenging riders to wear their best proudly South African outfit and celebrate with Savanna. There’s just one twist: yellow must be the dominant color. Just a reminder that the Dress-Up Competition will be held on Sunday, 17 November, and to be eligible, riders need to complete the stage in the same outfit they start in. We encourage all riders to take up the challenge, as it adds a fun and vibrant element to South Africa’s MTB Party of the Year!”
