SA multi-sport athlete Nico Sterk will be gunning for the coveted men’s champion title on Saturday, 24 May 2014 when he takes on the revered 80km FNB Magalies Monster Mountain Bike (MTB) Classic presented by ISUZU at the ATKV Buffelspoort (North West Province).

Sterk took on his first FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic in 2013.  “I enjoyed the whole race, except the Monster climb, it is really brutal,” said Sterk.  “I love competing against other cyclists regardless of the outcome at the finish.  The FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic route is a wonderful showcase of the natural beauty on offer in the Buffelspoort Valley.  The monster climb is legendary and one to remember. The route mostly consists of sandy gravel roads mixed with extreme rocky sections and lots of jeep track”.

“I love Buffelspoort and the area in general,” continues Sterk.  “I am fascinated by both the history and the rich fauna and flora of the Magalies Mountain Range.  I also have good memories having placed 2ndat the 2013 FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic and 2nd overall at the Totalsports XTERRA Buffelspoort earlier this year.  My goal is to give my best in the race.  I am hoping for a podium position.  The FNB Magalies Monster MTB Classic is a bucket list MTB race for everyone in Gauteng and the surrounding area.  I have heard rumors among the real MTB riders that you may only call yourself a MTB rider if you have done the MONSTER”.

According to Alexa Cunningham, Event Manager, riders participating in the 80km “Monster,” can look forward to a mild route change, with some technical single-track, undulating jeep-track, adrenaline-pumping down hills and pure countryside.  “Wildlife sightings are certainly on the cards when riding through the Kumbagana Game Reserve.  After completing the event, riders will be able to exchange war-stories while relaxing in the shaded ISUZU Chill Zone (bar area), at the ATKV race venue, which will also boast a host of local food vendors.  Riders can stock up on much needed energy in the Bokomo Breakfast Zone in the morning before their race, while REHIDRAT Sport will be on hand to ensure that riders Stay Healthy, Stay Hydrated, both on route and in the REHIDRAT Zone after the race,” says Cunningham.
