Summerplace Game Reserve, one of South Africa’s premier mountain bike destinations, has increased its commitment to attracting mountain bikers from around the country – and the world – by investing in a large fleet of eBikes.

The fleet comprises entirely Specialized Turbo Levo bikes, mostly the SL Comp model, which rides and feels like a trail bike with around a 2hr30min battery range and a couple of full-power Turbo Levo Alloy models, with up to five hours of trail time.

“We invested in our bike-guiding staff recently. We now have five resident internationally qualified mountain bike guides at Summerplace Game Reserve,” said David Baber, co-owner and avid mountain biker.

The eBike rental option at Summerplace Game Reserve allows even non-mountain bikers the opportunity to do a guided safari by bicycle. The qualified guides ensure everyone has a fulfilling experience.

“We have also been expanding our mountain bike trails network steadily and now have more than 90km of trails, most of which is singletrack. As we are now in the rainy season, we are splitting our focus between maintenance and building, but we have some exciting plans for 2023, both in terms of cyclo-tourism and mountain bike events,” added Baber.

One of the primary benefits of eBikes is that they have adjustable pedal-assistance to allow everyone the opportunity to enjoy a mountain bike ride with no prior conditioning required. They also allow spouses, family members or friends of mountain bikers to be able to do a ride with them without the traditional associated anxiety and pressure.

The option to rent eBikes at Summerplace Game Reserve now makes it possible for experienced mountain bikers to explore more trails or ‘shuttle’ some of the iconic descending trails.

“Now that we have eBikes for rental, more visitors to Summerplace can experience our stimulating mountain bike trails or enjoy a game viewing experience from the saddle of a bicycle. This will also make it attractive for international visitors because there aren’t many game reserves that offer guided rides on high-quality eBikes,” explained Baber.

The Summmerplace Game Reserve eBike fleet comprises 12 bikes, which range in size to suit most guests. Bikes can be rented for a session (up to 3 hours) or for a full day and include a helmet and an experienced, qualified guide. Rates will be given to those that enquire with Summerplace Game Reserve via email: bookings@summerplacegamereserve.com.

The eBike fleet comprises Specialized Turbo Levo and Levo SL full-suspension trail bikes.

Summerplace Game Reserve is located near Vaalwater in the UNESCO Waterberg Biosphere in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. In addition to offering a world-class mountain bike trails network, it’s also home to some rare species of antelope, including Roan Antelope, Southern Reedbuck, Mountain Reedbuck and Tsessebe. It also has Giraffe, Bushbuck, Wildebeest, Eland, Sable, Warthog, Kudu, Zebra, Impala, Waterbuck and Brown Hyena. The conservation-orientated reserve also recently introduced breeding herds of free-range Roan Antelope and Tsessebe, not commonly found in game reserves.
