After we tested the BLS VeloRacing Bag and waxed lyrical about it’s modular design and organisational ability, BLS sent us their ‘exclusive’ version for us to test. What’s in a name we thought, time to unpack the features that make the exclusive version different. Ok.
It shares the same block-shaped design using a modular storage system specific to cycling gear and other items, but with some key differences in material, design and extra storage.
What stands out?
A higher quality material, the medium gray coloured material is a hardier material with a ripstop weave that also feels more padded. We also noticed it’s water proofed, or at least resistant and obviously that needed to be tested, so we used a hose pipe (from rain water) and only really noticed water ingress via the zips. We call it a pass considering what this bag’s intended use is. The strap, clips and ykk zips are all also finished with chrome plating and a satin anodising.
Like it’s less exclusive brother, there are four compartments separated by a single divider held in place by Velcro, as well as a separate module (this has a zipped lid) for gels, multi tools and accessories. The compartments are specific for helmet, shoes, water bottles and kit/clothing, a main addition is the side compartment with individualised compartments for tools, spares, phone etc. There’s also a side zip for rags or light items and such like.
What we like:
The really solid feel and extra protection offered in the materials used, this also makes it easier to clean and should last longer. The strap is improved with a wider shoulder pad, so is easier to carry.
Included in the exclusive bag are two quality 500mm water bottles with BLS branding, we used these a few times and felt impressed with them not leaking or losing fluid when shaking up with supplement mixes. You know, for those long days. Also included are two drawstring bags made with thicker than standard material, great for wet/damp kit and shoes.
We especially liked the extra side compartment for stashing all kinds of extra tools and spares, power pack, rain jacket, pads etc … all with easy access.
Our photographer even managed to fit some camera gear in there.
The helmet module easily accommodates trail/enduro helmets, even one or two with removable jaw protectors, this does mean you need to remove the storage box though, but with it’s zippable lid it’s not a hassle.
What we don’t like:
The grey and red wasn’t to everyone’s taste, this is personal choice though and doesn’t detract from the practicality or looks of the bag.
The exclusive bag is slightly lower than it’s cousin, this isn’t a train smash but is noticable if you’re wearing a larger shoe size than a ten and packing more kit on top of the helmet compartment. Pricing, it’s a fair bit more than the standard veloracing bag, but to be fair we see and feel the difference in construction and features. It’s a product that should last a lifetime.
VERDICT
Who should buy this product & why?
Those looking for luggage that is well designed and feature made for cycling and cyclists looking for something a little more organised and feature packed for their riding and training needs. In fact it could also make a good support option for ultra endurance events when you need to be share where everything is.
Value for money?
Like the standard VeloRacing bag, yes. The Exclusive VeloRacing bag is, practicaly designed, has good storage options and should last a life time. In fact, the more we used it the more invaluable we felt it was towards minimising the admin of getting ready for rides, as well as the inevitable post ride unpack. Alongside it’s cousin it has become a favoured piece of kit, especially for our bigger rides and days out.
