As we close in on revealing the Top 5 of TREAD’s Top Trails of 2020, we figured a summary of Trails ranked 15 to 6 is in order. It’s important to know that this is a subjective ranking based on the TREAD team’s riding experiences at the various trails around South Africa since TREAD launched in 2009.   1. Big Red Barn – Midrand, Gauteng

An established, well maintained mountain bike trails park close to Pretoria and Johannesburg that caters for most mountain bikers. Very family-friendly.

  1. The Spruit – Johannesburg/Randburg/Sandton, Gauteng

Possibly South Africa’s most popular mountain bike trail, The Spruit offers a stimulating ride for all levels of rider – you just need some local knowledge (or a Spruit regular) to find exactly which sections have your ideal fix.

  1. Tokai – Cape Town, Western Cape

The gradient on the slopes of the mountain looking over False Bay, is generous and has resulted in the building and maintenance of a stimulating, well-planned trail network that offers steady climbs and exciting descents. A real Cape Town asset.

  1. Cradle Moon – Muldersdrift, Gauteng

With the large dam and the interesting dam wall, as well as surrounding hills and variety of game, you won’t find a more scenic place to ride a mountain bike in Gauteng. The mountain bike trails are well-maintained and stimulating for all levels of rider.

  1. Buffelsdrift – Pretoria, Gauteng

Buffelsdrift is a world-class mountain bike trails park just north of Pretoria that offers stimulating trails for every level of rider, both in terms of fitness and skill. It’s more than a trails park though, it’s a wonderful bushveld escape with your bike.

  1. Northern Farm – Diepsloot Nature Reserve, Gauteng

Northern Farm is a breath of fresh air, offering a vast trail network for all levels of mountain biker less than half an hour from the city hustle of Johannesburg. There are very few trails parks that can genuinely claim to offer great riding for all levels of mountain biker, but Northern Farm is one of them. It’s just a pity it’s only open on weekends and public holidays.

  1. Holla Trails – Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal

Holla Trails is one of the original South African mountain bike trails parks. With driven staff, Holla Trails has always shown resourcefulness and ambition that’s resulted in a vast network of reliably stimulating trails for all levels of mountain biker.

  1. Giba Gorge MTB Park – Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal

Giba Gorge is one of the original mountain bike trails parks in South Africa. What it lacks in distance, it makes up for in vertical riding, offering both challenging and rewarding riding experiences for all levels of rider, just a short drive from most of Durban’s western suburbs. It’s a progressive MTB trails park that’s moving with the times.

  1. Paul Cluver & Oak Valley – Elgin, Western Cape

The Oak Valley and Paul Cluver mountain bike trails parks offer more than just scenic riding. They have high quality, purpose-built well-marked singletrack trails that are highly engaging and well maintained and which are used annually for the prestigious FNB Wines2Whales mountain bike stage race. Well worth a drive from Cape Town for a day or a weekend.

  1. Stellenbosch, Western Cape

Just this collection of trails makes Stellenbosch a stimulating place to ride mountain bikes. There’s essentially something for every type of mountain biker in Stellenbosch. Much credit must go to the local residents and businesses that financially support the Stellenbosch Trail Fund.
