Exactly 44 years ago today, 20 January 1977, the first mountain bike race was filmed and broadcast. The race was called Repack, essentially an Enduro, where riders pedalled or pushed heavy Klunker bikes slowly up Mount Tamalpais in Northern California and then were timed, one by one, on the descent. Here’s the seven-minute segment that was aired on CBS. It features among others, Charlie Kelly and Gary Fisher, the two guys who started a bicycle business together and called it MountainBikes (one word).
