The first instalment of the 2017 South African Downhill National Cup Series takes place this coming weekend, as it forms part of the MTB Gravity Series in Helderberg in the Western Cape. The national event will take place on Sunday 29 January.
Course designer Jan van Skalkwyk said: “Everything is running smoothly from my side, we are currently busy with the final course preparation, making sure that the course is clear and safe, and it looks like we are going to have a little bit of rain before the weekend, which is just what we need.”
Van Skalkwyk mentioned that due to the land owner needing to utilise some of the land, the course has been shortened slightly. “It’s between 1.3km and 1.4km long, and closer to two minutes long,” he added.
Event organiser, Riaan du Preez says that at the moment the Downhill event is looking great at close to 50 pre-entries so far. “None of the riders can wait to get down the mountain,” he said.
Although the course has been closed for most of the week due to alterations, downhill enthusiasts have rumoured to have gotten started on the course, with many rather enjoying their ride.
“The health and safety guys, the commissaires, and all those others involved behind the scenes are all ready as well,” du Preez said.
Du Preez also mentioned that there will be food stalls for riders and spectators to grab a drink and snack on the day.
